Urgent Things To Do When Your Kid Eats Poop
In this post I am sharing stories by different parents and their kids encounter with pet’s and their own poop. In this post we will also try to find the urgent things to do when your kid eats poop.
Story 1
On my trip to Dubai, my husband planned to meet one of his friends there, and I got the opportunity to meet one of my school friends. I was meeting her after a decade. We decided that I will come to her house with my 18-month-old toddler. We were busy catching up on the things we had missed on each other in the past decade. My friend’s husband was working from home and had arranged everything for my welcome as directed by his pregnant wife.
My toddler and I were thrilled to see her two cute pet cats, Bob and Kia, roaming in the house.
My toddler was crawling here and there. We were keeping an eye on him. Then my friend gifted my son a set of blocks. We opened it for him to play with so that he sits in a place, and we can chat comfortably. My son enjoyed playing with blocks and remained engaged for some time. We also got engrossed in our talks. Then we heard a shout coming from one of the bathrooms. Realizing my toddler was not around, we both hurried to the bathroom and saw my friend’s husband shouting in panic. We asked him what has happened. He told us my son has cat poop in his mouth.
We didn’t realize how and when my toddler crawled to the bathroom where my friend’s hubby was cleaning the cat’s litter box, and there he ate a small piece that fell on the floor. He was so quiet and busy in his actions that no one noticed him. When my friend’s hubby turned back to keep the litter box on the floor which he had cleaned, he saw my child doing something so displeasing, so he shouted in panic. I quickly picked him up and rinsed his mouth multiple times. Oh God, within a fraction of a second, I felt unpleasant, yucky, worried, and drained all at once.
Luckily, there one of my friend’s friends was a pediatrics doctor. We consulted him, and he said it’s more common than we can even think. He suggested us to keep an eye on his health for the next 24 hours. He may get diarrhea, fever, or an upset tummy.
Fortunately, none of the symptoms, as told by the doctor, appeared, and my toddler remained happy and healthy.
So, this was my story of going to a foreign country and landing in such a draining situation where my kid ate a pet’s poop.
Now my child is 5-years-old, and when I told him about this incident, he didn’t believe me.
Story 2
It was a sunny winter morning. I gave a shower to my 2-year-old daughter and took her to the park. It was my routine every weekend so that she can play with her friends in the Sun and can get some Vitamin D. As soon as I reached there, she started playing with her peer group. I also got busy chatting with my friends in the park. Then suddenly, my friend shouted, look out what your daughter is doing. I turned back to see my daughter was sitting near a dog poop and was looking observantly at it and was slowly bringing her index finger to touch and check what it is. I rushed and grabbed my daughter with her arms and kept her aside. I felt such a sigh of relief after keeping my daughter away from something so gruesome.
Story 3
It was a warm sunny morning as I just finished giving a shower to my 13-month-old son. The doorbell rang, so I wrapped him in a towel and made him sit on the cot so that he stays safe and busy with his toys for a while and I can check who is at the door. I went to open the door to collect some courier. It took me barely five mins maximum. When I returned to the room, I saw my son has pooped and is rubbing it on both hands.
I am sure many of the parents must have been in such unpleasant circumstances.
But should we be scared of cat poops??
My answer to this question is Yes.
Why should we be scared of Cat poops?
We should be scared of cat poops because their poop has parasites.
Toxoplasmosis is a disease that results from infection with the Toxoplasma gondii parasite, one of the world’s most common parasites. This disease can cause vision loss, mental retardation, deafness, and seizures.
Do you know why pregnant women are screened for toxoplasmosis?
Yes, doctors usually perform some components of the TORCH screen routinely when a woman has her first prenatal visit. These diseases can cross the placenta and cause defects in the newborn.
But it is not just cat poop that is harmful dog feces also 23 million fecal coliform bacteria, which are known to cause cramps, diarrhea, intestinal illness, and serious kidney disorders in humans.
Urgent Things To Do When Your Kid Eats Poop
- Clean your child first.
- Rinse the child’s mouth thoroughly with water first and then with a toothpaste.
- Keep him under your observation for at least 48 hours, don’t send him to either school or to the daycare.
- Contact Poison Control Helpline for consultation.
- Contact your kid’s pediatrician and do whatever he says.
- Don’t give your kid any outside food during this time as bacterias in cat poop can result in diarrhea, and outside food can only worsen the situation.
Toddlers are indeed so cute and loving, but they can do something unexpectedly so gross, which can create an everlasting memory in our minds and keep us feeling unpleasant for years to come. I hope no parent lands in a situation where their kid eats poop, and if unfortunately they do, now you know what you should do.

Thank You so much Molly for your comment.
Oh wow, do kids actually do that? Do they eat poo if left unsupervised? I hope that’s not a situation I ever have to deal with when I have kids
The kids are curious and should never be left unattended, Although theses incidents are very common but I still hope no parent has to deal with such gross incidents. Thank You so much for your comment.

Well, you have raised a good issue. when my kids were younger, they never did anything like this. But, you never know, just like in your case and many others; kids do get curious about the poop and may sometimes swallow or play with it. The parasites for sure are there in the stools of the pets or some people’s stools mostly living in underdeveloped countries. You have given some helpful suggestions for keeping our babies safe. P.S If the kid started playing with the poop, he/she got some psychological issues.
