Books train your mind to imagination to think big – Taylor Swift.
Rules Of Reading for the small kids
- Read it aloud and clearly. It will help your child learn many new words with the correct pronunciations.
- Read it daily. A daily routine for reading is a must if you want your child also to read books.
- Fix a time to read and follow it every day.
- Stay focussed while reading. If you want your child to pay attention when you are reading, ensure you also stay focussed and involved while doing so.
- Do not divert your attention to your phone now and then. It is tough to grab the attention of a little kid, and when you are getting their time and attention, ensure you make most of it. Do not repel them by continuous distraction from your phone.
- Involve your child also while reading. I read the book Gruffalo and The Smartest Giant in Town by Julia Donaldson almost daily to my child, and after a few days, I saw when I start reading a sentence from the book, my 4-year-old use to complete the full lines. It was so much fun.
- Books are one of the best replacements for screen time of a child. My child was a picky eater, and I had to show him videos to engage him while feeding. But I could only reduce his screen time to zero hours with the help of books.
- Buy picture books for your child while you read the storybooks for your child, then ask your child to read a picture story for you. Do it turn wise. Soon you will see your child telling the full complete story very nicely from starting to end.

If you are going to get anywhere in life, you have to read a lot of books.” – Roald Dahl.
Vocabulary Building-Research studies have found a positive association between parents reading to their children and the subsequent reading skills, language improvement, and cognitive development in the child. Children who are read to more frequently at an early age enter school with larger vocabularies and more advanced comprehension skills (Mol & Bus, 2011).
Develops cognitive skills and reading habits- Reading to preschoolers is related to language growth, emergent literacy, and reading achievement. (Bus et al., 1995). Besides, reading to children also stimulates them to read books themselves and further develop their cognitive skills (Canoy et al., 2006).
Improves Performance-Children read more frequently at age 4-5 achieve higher scores in the assessment.
The results indicate a direct causal effect from reading to children at a young age and their future schooling outcomes regardless of parental income, education level, or cultural background.
Effect of reading every day to small kids-A research study reveals that reading to children at age 4-5 every day has a positive result on their reading and cognitive skills (i.e., language and literacy, numeracy and cognition) later in life.
The parents should try to keep their kids engaged in the book by talking to them while reading. This way of reading enhances the interest of kids in the book. It is necessary to keep kids engage in the text you are reading to them. When parents interact with their children around books, this affects how children engage with the books.
Besides developing knowledge, reading helps in building a bond between the child and parents.
Research shows Book reading can play an important role in the wake and sleep patterns by making book reading part of the bedtime routine.
Now coming to my own experience as a mother, my child was addicted to watching videos and cartoons while eating as he was a picky eater. When I started reading some interesting books for my small child, I saw some positive effects on the behaviour. The screen time reduced considerably from 2-3 hours a day to almost zero.
Hope I have shared enough pieces of evidence as to why every parent should read for their kids.
